Tone at the top does not encourage whistleblowers. <\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p>Tone at the top might acknowledge a whistleblowing system, but if it does not encourage whistleblowers, then there is a chance the whistleblowing system does not work well.<\/p>\r\n<h3 id=\"mcetoc_1i1ugag6r2\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px\">2. There is no meaningful reward or recognition for legitimate whistleblowers. <\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p>It is very rare that companies provide reward or recognition for whistleblowers. On the contrary, in many cases, the persons often get ostracized, their employments get terminated, or they even get threat. Without meaningful rewards, a person has no reason to be whistleblowers.<\/p>\r\n<h2 id=\"mcetoc_1i1uggsi53\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px\">3. The system does not guarantee anonymity.<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>Confidentiality is critical in a whistleblowing system because most whistleblowers can face retaliation. Emission scandal of Volkswagen in 2015 teaches us a lesson that if a company does not guarantee the confidentiality of the whistleblowers, then there will be no one to speak out the truth.<\/p>\r\n<h3 id=\"mcetoc_1i1ughbbl4\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px\">4. Inability to communicate with anonymous whistleblowers. <\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p>An anonymous whistleblower may not be able to provide sufficiently detailed or contextual information in their initial report. Due to the limited contact with the whistleblower, investigators face difficulties in conducting follow-up communications. This leads to a lack of crucial data that could strengthen or substantiate the report. Ultimately, this limitation results in the failure to properly investigate the incoming report.<\/p>\r\n<h3 id=\"mcetoc_1i1ugi2jh5\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px\">5. The system is not well-promoted. <\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p>Although your companies have implemented whistleblowing systems, but if you do not adequately communicate it to your employees, then they do not know anything about the system.<\/p>\r\n<h3 id=\"mcetoc_1i1ugmveh6\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px\">6. The whistleblowing system is not perceived independent. <\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p>Audit committees often delegate responsibilities to administrative staff and investigators, who whistleblowers may perceive as lacking independence and not legally entitled to confidentiality. This perception can discourage potential whistleblowers from reporting their findings.
