fake degreesIndia’s academic sector has been shocked by the news of the sale of fake degrees by one of its renowned universities, Manav Bharti University (MBU). MBU reportedly sold 36,000 fake degrees over 11 years for prices ranging from of 100,000 to 300,000 rupees (US$1,362-4,085), as reported by South China Morning Post. A special team of investigators in India found that of the 41,000 degrees issued by the university, so far only 5,000 are authentic.

This case is claimed to be India’s largest educational fraud case, which went viral in February 2021. Trak.in reported that MBU has been involved in a massive fraud since 2009. The Himachal Pradesh government gave Manav Bharti Charitable Trust permission to run the university in 2009 after initially rejecting a proposal related to this in 2008. Investigation on this case began after an anonymous report was made to the University Grants Commission.

Raj Kumar Rana, the chairman of Manav Bharti Charitable Trust, which runs MBU, has been the main defendant in the fake degree fraud, Edexlive.com reported.

Global ripple effects: educational background check

The MBU scandal had far-reaching consequences beyond India’s borders. In Singapore, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) launched an investigation into 15 individuals who had presented qualifications from MBU in their work permit applications.

MOM emphasized that it is the employer’s responsibility to verify the authenticity of educational qualifications before hiring foreign workers. This incident illustrates the dangers companies face when they fail to implement rigorous education background checks.

Singapore’s verification procedures are considered stringent. After employers submit academic records, MOM conducts its own background checks to confirm the validity of the documents. This multi-layered approach ensures that unqualified individuals cannot exploit fake credentials to secure jobs.

Understanding diploma mills and their tactics

Diploma mills are often unaccredited institutions that sell fake academic qualifications to individuals seeking shortcuts, but not all cases involve unaccredited entities. Some universities that hold legitimate accreditation have also been implicated in selling fake degrees or granting qualifications without meeting proper academic standards.

These operations typically exploit the growing demand for educational credentials by offering quick, effortless degrees with no real value. Many diploma mills use names that sound legitimate and even create fake accreditation bodies to deceive employers and students.

This reality highlights the importance of vigilance and reliable degree verification processes, as even recognized institutions can compromise academic integrity.

Why fake degrees are a growing threat

The sale and use of fake degrees are not isolated to India. The global rise in diploma mills and counterfeit educational documents poses a serious challenge for employers, regulators and genuine academic institutions.

Key risks associated with hiring candidates with fake credentials include:

  1. Compromised quality and productivity. Hiring unqualified individuals may lead to costly mistakes.

  2. Reputation damage. Organizations found employing individuals with fake degrees risk public trust and credibility.

  3. Legal liabilities. Employing staff with fraudulent qualifications could lead to legal consequences, especially in regulated industries.

  4. Workplace safety. Positions requiring specialized skills such as engineering or medicine pose risks when filled by unqualified candidates.

As this scandal shows, even seemingly reputable institutions can be involved in fraudulent activities. Organizations must therefore go beyond trusting documents at face value.
